Shingles, also known as zoster, is caused by the varicella-zoster virus – the same virus that causes chickenpox. People who recovered from chickenpox may develop shingles as the virus enters their nervous system and lies dormant for years. If their immune system becomes weakened, the virus may reactivate.

98% of adults in Hong Kong had chickenpox. Anyone who had chickenpox, even if they are in good health, has a chance to give develop shingles. Starting from the age of 50, the risk of developing shingles doubles every year. The risk of developing persistent neuralgia is also higher. People who have diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, renal failure, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus are at higher risk than healthy individuals.

The patient will develop painful red rashes that consist blisters on one side of the face, back, waist, head or neck. The pain may last for a month and many describe it hurt more than childbirth and post-surgery. A shingle rash near the facial nerves by one’s eyes or ears can cause other complications, including hearing loss and blindness. Other possible complications include acute viral encephalitis, stroke, and post-herpetic neuralgia.
About one-quarter of patients suffer from post-herpetic neuralgia. Some suffer from nerve pain like shooting, stabbing or burning sensation for months, some even last for years. Sometimes, patients feel very sensitive to touching and need long tern painkiller medications which significantly affects their quality of life.

Shingrix Recombinant zoster vaccine is newly added to the market and approved by US FDA and EU EMA. People 50 years of age or older should receive two doses of this vaccine. Shingrix is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia. Side effects are temporary, including sore arm with mild or moderate pain, redness and swelling at injection site, tiredness, muscle pain, a headache, shivering, fever, stomach pain, or nausea. Symptoms went away on their own in about 2 to 3 days. You should not get Shingrix if you have severe allergic rection to any component of the vaccine of the previous dose, currently have shingles or currently are pregnant or breastfeeding.

1. For purchase made online, a redemption letter will be sent to your delivery address and a confirmation email account when you have completed the transaction. For purchase made at Watsons’s physical stores, you will be provided with a purchase receipt.
2. Booking method: Visit the official appointment website of Virtus (https://bit.ly/3lSEUYr) to fill in your personal details, select the date and time of vaccination, and enter the “Redemption Reference No” on this redemption letter under the “Click here to enter your redemption code” on the Payment Details Page to make an appointment.
3. Appointment for the vaccination service must be made in advance, walk-in registration will NOT be accepted.
4. Appointment is not confirmed until a confirmation email message Virtus has been received.
5. Appointment must be made at least two working days in advance.
6. Once the appointment is confirmed, no changes, cancellations or refunds will be accepted.
7. The redemption letter/ purchase receipt can only be redeemed once and cannot be used if lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. No replacement will be provided in these circumstances.
8. As the service hour, address and telephone number of the designated service centres may be updated from time to time, please check Virtus’ website to ensure that such information is correct before you make the appointment.
9. The appointment for vaccination service must be made within 14 days from the date of Purchase.
10. For purchase made online, you must present your HKID/Hong Kong and Macau Travel Permit/ Passport, vaccination record, this original redemption letter, the order confirmation email from Watsons and booking confirmation email from Virtus to the service centre on the date of appointment for the vaccination. Photocopy of this redemption letter will not be accepted.
11. For purchase made at Watsons’s physical stores, you must present your HKID/Hong Kong and Macau Travel Permit/ Passport, vaccination record, the purchase receipt and booking confirmation email from Virtus to the service centre on the date of appointment for the vaccination.

13. You will be assessed by a healthcare professional of Virtus as to your suitability for vaccination prior to the provision of the vaccination service. If you are considered not to be suitable for the vaccination service after the healthcare professional’s consultation, you may submit a request to Watsons for a refund.
14. Before purchasing and using this service, purchaser and user should understand and agree with the details of the service.
15. This service is not for the purpose of medical diagnosis or treatment.
16. All items included in this service are fixed. Unless otherwise stated in these terms and conditions. There will be no refund nor exchange of any of those items whatsoever
17. Neither amendment nor cancellations is allowed once the payment has been confirmed.

19. If the vaccination service cannot be performed due to special reasons (such as the occurrence of a force majeure event), Virtus reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend any part(s) of the vaccination service.
